A quote from the 1936 Frazer Nash catologue:
‘The Frazer Nash possesses an all-round performance unequalled by any other sports car, the docility of a touring car combined with fierce acceleration, capacity for speed, and that “glued-to-the-road” feeling of the thoroughbred racer.’ Quote taken from the 1936 Frazer Nash catologue. Apparently it was truth in advertising.
Frazer Nash was a remarkable small British auto company that manufactured fewer than 500 cars in it’s 36 year lifespan. 300 of those were the chain driven models that Frazer Nash built it’s reputation on. There starts our history:
A Chance Meeting:
In 1905 two young engineering students, in a place called Finsbury, England, met up and discovered a mutual interest in motorized vehicles. Ronald Godfrey and Archibald Goodman Frazer Nash became fast friends. Ronald sold Archibald a 11hp Clement motorcycle engine. This motor became the first power house for Archibald’s first four wheeler, built in his Mother’s house at Hendon, England.
After the young men graduated, they worked for an engineering company and continued to build motor cars in their spare time.
in 1909 Frazer Nash left the engineering company and started full time on his true love. Building cars. He built a cycle car that caught the attention of the editor of “The Motor Cycle” magazine. From an article published there, Frazer Nash received three firm orders. He immediately asked Godfrey to join him…and so the journey began.
The actual company was founded in1922 as “Archibald Frazer Nash”, “Frazer Nash Limited” and eventually “AFN Limited”.
It was the very beginnings of automotive history. Cars were weird looking contraptions, with lots of room for improvements. They were innovative, young men who loved motorized vehicles, which eventually turned them to racing, and building sports cars that could be raced. They became famous for unique sporting cars and developed a cult following.
In 1934 they became importers and assemblers of BMW cars, which were known as Frazer Nash BMW’s. Over the years Frazer Nash has competed in many competitions. One of their autos actually came third in the 1949 LeMans. The driver and owner of the car, Norman Culpan had driven his car from his home in Yorkshire to LeMans and back, showing the amazing reliablilty of the Frazer Nash autos.
