Kit Car History

Kit cars Have Been Around For many years

Kit cars have actually been around since 1896 but never became popular till the fifties.
It was then that many automotive bodies started breaking down from wear and tear. Instead of
repairing these vehicles many were being sent off to wrecking yards.

Then a new product hit the market. Fiber reinforced plastic “fiberglass”.
Components from the old cars would be converted into new vehicles, mostly sports cars, using fiberglass.
Avoiding High Auto Taxes in The UK

In the seventies in the UK, quite often normal production cars were sold partially assembled, to get
around the high taxes. They were then assessed as components rather than cars. The Lotus Elan was available
in this form. Manufacturers claimed the kits could be put together in a weekend.

The 70’s Decade

In the 1970’s kit cars were very popular. The majority were designed to bolt right onto VW Beetle chassis.
This was because the VW body could easily be separated from the chassis, leaving all the mechanical component attached. Thousands of kit cars were made thanks to “the people’s car” You could use the Beetle for all kinds of things. It was also a great little car on it’s own.

These days kit cars are mostly replicas of classic and antique autos. They are becoming rare themselves. There are several private companies doing custom work, as well as a variety of private individuals still building and producing them just for love and the never ending fascination with the automobile.

Our Kit car is the unique “1934 Frazer Nash TT Interceptor” redesigned by H.J. Aldington after Frazer Nash’s original configuration. This is the car that set the racing standards in the 1930’s. It was the only non-super charged car to finish the 1933 Alpine Trial. Only 36 were produced in 1933 and 39 in 1934. So it is rare indeed and almost impossible to find the actual car. That is why this extraordinary autombile was selected for the full size replicar kit line.
